What is man?

Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord,

How excellent is Your name in all the earth,

Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants

You have ordained strength,

Because of Your enemies,

That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,

The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,

What is man that You are mindful of him,

And the son of man that You visit him?

For You have made him a little lower than the angels,

And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things under his feet,

All sheep and oxen—

Even the beasts of the field,

The birds of the air,

And the fish of the sea

That pass through the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,

How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

‘What is man that You are mindful of him?’ David wondered how the creator of all the universe could have in His mind to create us humans. I like to think of it in this way-God has created all this…FOR US! His beautiful creation is for us to enjoy and to ponder. And hopefully, our pondering will prompt us to seek Him out, though He is not far from each one of us (Acts 17:27).

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” He has made us in such a way that we will participate is doing good deeds, if we truly want to be pleasing to Him. We still are able to reject Him, but He has given us all the things necessary to please Him, if we’ll only take advantage. We are therefore without excuse; we cannot say that He has no regard for us, given that we are His creation.
